What will our future electricity market look like?

With the direction of travel for market reform now set, all stakeholders have a role in ensuring Reformed National Pricing is a success. As we look towards the next milestone of the UK Government’s Reformed National Pricing Delivery Plan, there is no time to lose in working out how best to coordinate the market reforms, strategic plans and network upgrades that will deliver an energy system fit for the future.

This session will explore the core issues facing policymakers as we discuss with key stakeholders what Reformed National Pricing will mean for our future electricity market.

In this session, you’ll learn:

  • How key stakeholders see Reformed National Pricing being delivered to drive GB towards a clean energy system
  • The role of Government, NESO and Ofgem in turning strategic plans into reality
  • What is needed to ensure consumers and the country gain maximum benefit from reforms delivered under Reformed National Pricing

To plan or not to plan? Shaping our future energy system

The Strategic Spatial Energy Plan (SSEP) is considered central to delivering Reformed National Pricing. But, as the development of the SSEP and wider strategic plans continue at pace, fundamental questions remain about the role of the market in guiding locational investment decisions in a strategically planned system.

This session will be a deep dive into how strategic planning and market signals, such as Transmission Network Use of System (TNUoS) charges, can work in harmony to bring forward the new energy assets we need in the locations we need them to achieve an optimal clean energy system.

In this session, you’ll learn:

  • The role of the SSEP in Reformed National Pricing and how the SSEP will build on the UK Government’s plans to deliver Clean Power 2030
  • The policies and mechanisms which can be used to deliver the SSEP and how an appropriate balance between planning-based and market-based mechanisms can be reached
  • How locational investment signals may change under Reformed National Pricing and what this could mean for developers of both new and existing assets.

Balancing act: operating our future electricity system

From reforms to the Balancing Mechanism to improving interconnector flows, the Reformed National Pricing package identifies a range of measures which could alleviate network constraints and improve system operability. These measures will be essential for ensuring we make the best use of system assets as we decarbonise the grid, ensuring GB’s electricity market best serves the needs of consumers.

This session will explore the crucial issue of ensuring Reformed National Pricing delivers a flexible, resilient and operationally efficient electricity system.

In this session, you’ll learn:

  • How the operability of the electricity system can be improved under Reformed National Pricing
  • The crucial role that low-carbon flexible assets will play in managing network constraints and ensuring a secure and efficient future energy system
  • How reforms to improve system operability proposed under Reformed National Pricing are likely to impact market participants across generation, storage and demand
