National Heat Networks: A Vision For Scotland
More than half of Scotland’s energy consumption is used for heating. To meet the Scottish Government’s commitment of decarbonising heat by 2045, it is critically important that we change how we heat our buildings.
Heat networks, also known as district heating, can be the cornerstone of a more flexible energy system in Scotland. District heat networks are the most cost-effective solution for providing affordable, low-carbon heat in densely populated areas such as cities and towns. Heat networks offer a range of other benefits including the ability to utilise waste heat, allow access to natural heat sources, enhance energy system flexibility and support economic growth, driving Scotland towards a sustainable, net-zero future.
Scottish Renewables is calling on the Scottish Government to establish a national Heat Networks Vision that will drive heat decarbonisation across Scotland. The vision should sit above all Local Heat and Energy Efficiency Strategies (LHEES) ensuring close alignment and integration with broader plans for renewable energy and electricity network expansion.
This document outlines the actions that the Scottish and UK Governments must take to realise the vision of a heat network in each of Scotland's cities.
