Responding to the decision by the UK Government today (October 21) to approve the Jackdaw gas field in the North Sea and establish a new Energy Wealth Fund, Angela Hepworth, CEO of Scottish Renewables, said:

"Scottish Renewables does not comment on individual oil and gas approvals. We do, however, recognise that global events have brought domestic energy production into sharper focus. Today’s decision must now be matched by a renewed drive to deliver our long-standing clean energy ambitions.

"The UK needs a pragmatic approach to its energy future that secures investment, jobs and energy supplies in a volatile world. Global instability has raised operating costs and underlined our exposure to volatile gas prices. As the global shift towards electrification continues, the case for homegrown clean energy is stronger than ever.

"Scotland has strong foundations to build on. Businesses are already diversifying from oil and gas into renewables, using their subsea and offshore expertise to sustain Scotland’s industrial capabilities and skilled jobs. We must build on that progress by accelerating fixed and floating offshore wind, using future revenues from domestic production to help widen those opportunities.

"Realising this potential means creating the right conditions for investment. That is why we called last year for the Energy Profits Levy to be replaced, alongside reform of unpredictable transmission charges that undermine Scotland's competitiveness and deter investment in offshore wind.

"The UK and Scottish governments must tackle delays in consenting and grid connections, reform transmission charging and provide a clear, long-term route to market for Scottish projects. That certainty will give businesses confidence to invest, sustain skilled employment and secure lasting prosperity for Scottish communities."
