UK Government's Energy Bill receives Royal Assent
Described as ‘the biggest piece of energy legislation in the UK’s history’, the UK Government’s Energy Bill yesterday (October 26) became law having received Royal Assent.
Responding, Claire Mack, Chief Executive of Scottish Renewables, said:
“The Energy Bill is a significant piece of legislation which will play an important role in supporting the UK’s climate change commitments.
“It has been really encouraging to see the UK and Scottish Governments working together during key stages of the Bill to ensure vital components of the legislation deliver for Scotland’s renewable energy industry, and it is vital that this collaborative working continues in the months and years ahead.
“For some time it had been clear that Ofgem needed a responsibility for the UK’s net-zero targets added to its remit. This legislation now ensures we have an energy regulator tasked with delivering an energy system fit for a net-zero future.
“We now need to see the UK Government implement the recommendations of Nick Winser, the Electricity Networks Commissioner, and invest in the electricity infrastructure that will be pivotal in facilitating our world-class clean power potential.”
