Saltire Prize Grand Challenge launched
28 August 2012

Speaking from Orkney at the launch of the Saltire Prize ‘Grand Challenge’ period Niall Stuart said:
"We have now embarked on the most exciting renewable energy competition in the world. It’s fantastic to see all four competitors deploying their ground breaking technologies, which have been tried and tested in Scottish waters, on a commercial scale.
“Scotland has led the world in the research and development of marine energy since Professor Stephen Salter’s work on the ‘duck wave energy device’ in the 1970s. Now, we are beginning to see that R&D expertise pave the way for a fully commercial industry. By 2020 we could have an installed capacity of 1.5GW, generating at least 10,000 jobs and £3.7 billion in annual capital and operating expenditure.
“I wish all the competitors the best of luck and have no doubt, it will be fascinating and hard fought contest.”
