The Committee for Climate Change new report shows rising energy bills caused primarily by rising cost of gas, not green policies
15 December 2011
Niall Stuart, Chief Executive of Scottish Renewables, said:
“This confirms what the renewables industry and independent regulator, Ofgem, already knew; that it is the volatility in the gas market that has driven consumer energy bills and not renewable energy.
“The Scottish renewables sector has unfairly been criticised in the past few months as the cause of increasing fuel poverty when in actual fact this industry has the potential to cure it.
“We now have independent and objective evidence that 84 per cent of the rise in household energy bills was completely unrelated to low carbon policies. Just £30 of an annual energy bill contributes to low carbon power generation including renewable energy, while £290 is directly attributable to gas prices and supplier costs.
“Overall, green energy policies will save consumers money – something which has been confirmed by the Department of Energy and Climate Change and Ofgem.”
